Sophie Lou Jacobsen’s Cardinal Series takes its name from both the Catholic presence in Venice, where the original inspiration was conceived, and the bird’s symbolism of hope, resilience and a visitor from a past life. The series draws from an exceptionally delicate 18th-century Venetian glass preserved at the Louvre. Its unlikely survival speaks to the paradoxical nature of glass: despite its fragility, the material can endure for centuries, protected by the very beauty that makes it feel so precious.
